The best advice comes from those who have experienced the exact trauma Americans are currently trying to survive. The best advice to America is from Germany in “Letter to America” by Jan Birkman.
As I always state in my political posts and as a human rights advocate, I am not anti-Trump. I am pro-Democracy and pro-Truth. President Trump and the Republican Party could change the downward course of our country in a minute if they chose to do so.
I learned lessons about men in authority years ago, when my only child was going through the diagnostic process to determine what incurable neuromuscular disease he had.
I experienced that the best advice for parenting a child with a lifelong disabling condition came from other parents, not from medical specialists.

When I went to register my son for first grade at the community elementary school, two blocks from where we lived, the new principal told me that Hayes would be better off at a school specializing in physical disabilities. I explained that we lived two blocks away, and it was my son’s right to attend school with his friends and neighbors.
I told Charles Kaplan that Hayes had successfully started kindergarten there. He had an IEP (Individual Education Plan) in place, and I expected it to be implemented, as required by law.
Once Kaplan realized I knew my son’s rights and my rights as his parent, Hayes got registered that day. In Kaplan’s mind, Hayes was a burden and “not worthy.” So, he was determined to force Hayes and me out of “his” school, and he started using the same tactics as Trump does.
Kaplan failed to implement my son’s IEP, which could have cost Hayes his life. He threatened to have me arrested. I had to hire an attorney. Behind closed doors, he lied about who I was during the PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization) meetings, teacher staff meetings, and referred to me as a “mother f*cker.”
I make this comparison because I know that if you trust the wrong source, instead of your research, your gut, and your faith, the results can be devastating.
The facts show that Trump and the GOP (Guardians Of Pedophiles) had a long-term plan (Project 2025) to destroy the America that took 250 years of blood, sweat, and tears to build.
The ICE murders, concentration camps, violent rhetoric, cruel treatment of children and adults, and Republican policies do not confirm a love for God or Jesus, only insatiable lust for money and the power to control.
As you know, in Trump’s America, we are bombarded every day with thousands of political news reports and heartbreaking stories. I am, however, most grateful that I did not scroll past this letter I saw one morning.
A Letter To America By Jan Birkman
“Dear American Citizens,
We have an urgent message for all Americans. We are observing a democracy in grave jeopardy with great risk to the freedoms that Americans hold so dear.
We know because we have been there. And we encourage and support peaceful and civil protests and actions to defend and save those freedoms.
We are a German non-governmental civil society network of independent organizations and private individuals. One of our members is a working group, OMAS of Gegen Rechts (Grannies Against the Far Right), who after being founded in Vienna Austria in 2017, has been active in Germany since 2018.
The OMAS are recognized as one of the most influential civil society women’s initiatives in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and campaigning against right-wing populism and for democracy.
The German grannies against the far right are women who grew up in mostly post-war Germany, and some of them experienced the Second World War themselves.
In this network, we have joined forces to take a stand against right-wing extremist ideologies and Fascism. Given Germany’s history, we see this as our collective duty, especially to our children and grandchildren.
We know from our own experience how Fascism can destroy a country, its freedom, and its society.
And it is our responsibility to leave our descendants and future generations a world in which there is no place for dictatorship, hatred, and fear.
World War II destroyed Europe and killed millions of people. Promises of greatness and superiority led our nation into a war of annihilation against our neighbors.
These promises duped people into following its egregious and inhumane ideology about “unworthy life.” It has taken generations to try and heal these wounds, and they remain.
That is why, after the Second World War, Germany took an oath on which our future is based. Never again will we allow ourselves to be ruled by Fascism.
Without the United States, the Allied forces would not have succeeded in liberating Germany from the terror of Nazism. We remain profoundly grateful for this. 🥲
Without your country, Germany would not have democracy today. This connects our two countries. And it is the reason we appeal to you so urgently today to warn all Americans your democracy is in danger.
When we look at today’s America, we see a deeply divided nation. We no longer see the country that helped liberate us a mere 80 years ago. What we see today leaves us profoundly shaken.”
“Make America Great Again” is a right-wing populist slogan. Slogans like these justify Fascism. We know because we have seen this before. We understand how Fascism grows and how it manipulates citizens with false promises that exploit their fears and prejudices.
We know because in our country too, people longed for a strong leader and believed his promises.
MAGA leaders are quickly destroying American democracy and society, and increasingly the American economy, while enriching themselves in the process.
It was no different here in 1933. At first, some people believed they were benefiting from Hitler’s policies, but that changed quickly. The Fascists had already divided people into categories and cruelly judged their worth and their lives.
Once Hitler became the Imperial Chancellor in January of 1933, it took the Nazis only two months to completely destroy the Weimar democracy.
Watching your federal government occupy cities and target migrants seems eerily familiar.“
“The rapid destruction of the rule of law, suppression of speech, including the press, the universities, science, and basic rights of assembly, imperialist fantasies about conquering other countries, even Allies.
Information control and centralized propaganda are blatant corruption of the highest level; violent expulsion of people under the guise of illegal migration, and an exodus of the brightest minds to other countries where they can freely do their work.
MAGA cannot offer a future to the American dream. Worse, the crisis of your democracy is directly linked to our future and indeed that of the world.
But, there is hope. We are seeing peaceful resistance to this new Fascism. Most recently, as response to ICE’s violence in Minneapolis and other cities, the NO KINGS movement has mobilized millions of protestors. These demonstrations are larger than anything that was seen in Germany in 1933.
The time to act is now. History has taught us that all it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing. We believe in the goodness of the American people. 🗽
We know there are millions of citizens on both sides of the political spectrum who are deeply concerned about the path their country is on, including those who thought their vote would make America great again.“
“Many hoped for a better future, but all they have gotten are lies. The time is now for the citizens of America to stand up to Fascism and defend your democracy just as you did for Germany and the world.
You still have a chance to do what our ancestors failed to do. Know that you are not alone. We are facing similar dangers here in Germany and Europe. But there’s many good people standing up for each other, for democracy, human rights, and a positive shared future.
NEVER AGAIN is now!” (Jan ended the reading of his letter by putting his hand over his heart in solidarity).
Responses From Grannies Who Survived The NAZIs
The question Jan Birkman asked was: What do you see when you look at the US now?
” What I see in the US now and what I have seen for several years is indeed a very frightening picture of the deconstruction of democratic freedoms. There is catastrophic news every day, which makes me freeze time and again.“
“When I look at the United States now, I’m creeped out. I am totally shocked how fast, within one year, the oldest democracy in the world is being deconstructed. For me, that is a deju vu to 1933 when the Nazis came to power here, only the Nazis did it even faster, within two months.”
“When I look at America, unfortunately, I see many parallels to Fascist thinking. It starts with the influence on the press, on the judiciary, the universities, and of course frightingly the recent actions in immigration policy.”
Jan Birkman asked the women a second question: Is there something you want to tell Americans about resistance?
“Yes. I admire how the people in the US show courage to resist, especially nowadays. AI (Artificial Intelligence) has such a huge influence as the people there are already so transparent that opposition and resistance become increasingly difficult and dangerous. And I thank all who make an effort to do so and to preserve freedom.”
“This right-wing scene, that is also fear-driven, hate-driven, has no future. In the long run, you will survive.”
“Dear Americans, stay brave and stay optimistic. It is important, and I doff my hat to everyone who takes a risk for their democracy and their freedom. You can do this!”
We The People Of The World Are All Connected
I am extremely grateful to Jan Birkman and to the women who shared their messages and lessons they learned as survivors of World War ll and the Nazis in their Letter To America.
The time that Jan and the OMAS took to share their concerns and personal stories about living in Nazi Germany shows our human connection and how fragile democracies are.
Many countries throughout the world struggle with Fascist leaders, and because of that, they stand in solidarity with other nations that resist and stand out to protect freedom for all.
This letter encouraged me. It helps to know that there are people around the world who understand that not all Americans are like Trump and MAGA, and who still see the real American spirit alive and strong in Minnesota and other cities in the United States.
My heartfelt thank you for believing in our goodness. We got this!
MAGA Does Not Offer A Path To The American Dream
Nothing Trump decides is based on Christian, American, or family values, peaceful solutions, or unifying America. His past and present behavior, documented over the decades, proves who he is and will also determine his legacy.
Since Donald Trump’s first term as President of the United States in 2016, Americans have witnessed him daily deconstruct what has always made America great. Most recently, I will never forgive or forget what he did to the People’s House, which is the White House.
He has repeated and amplified “America is being ripped off. And I’ll tell you what. We’re not going to have an America in 10 years if it keeps going like this. We’re a debtor nation, and we have to tax, we have to tariff, we have to protect this country. And nobody’s doing it.”
It’s not the immigrants, or the gay community, or our allies, or the libs ripping off America. As we all found out in Trump’s second term, it is him and all his power and money-loving buddies. Trump’s love language is gold and MAGA (Me Ars Gone Awry)😁, as the Irish would say.
If all Americans had based their vote on facts rather than feelings, on critical thinking rather than cult thinking, trusted their close family and friends rather than FOX News and right-wing propaganda, and remembered that there was nothing great about Trump’s first term, Kamala Harris would have won the election in 2024.
I always hoped I would live long enough to see a woman elected as President of the United States. Our world would be vastly different and less war-torn if women had been valued and trusted throughout history as equal and capable partners in leadership positions.
Kamala Harris would have prosecuted the pedophiles, and they would be in jail right now, and our country would be thriving instead of disappearing.
But as one MAGA told me, “Men have to be led by men.” That’s a whole other blog post.
If you pay attention to the strongest voices in the United States Congress now, you will find they are fearless women still fighting for what was promised 250 years ago, not just for white, wealthy, and powerful men, but liberty and justice for all.

Tough Cookie Tip: The political trauma loop of “us against them,” fear, hatred, propaganda, chaos, and cruelty are strong. But the love for one another, faith, peace, and freedom-loving people are stronger. I pray we will be smarter than the anger we are all feeling. Instead, I would suggest that you put your energy towards connecting with local resistance and advocacy groups. Remember to rest and take a break when you need to. And keep the faith.
I am immensely impressed by the masses of caring and courageous people, standing up for democracy and peacefully protesting against Trump’s policies and ICE. We love this country and believe in the promise of America for all. And when you also have the wise Grannies on your side, you know you’re on the winning team, Team America. ☺️As the OMAS said in their videos, “America, You got this!”
